• How Safe Is Your Maybank / Maybank2u Personal Information?

    March 31, 2008 | By Gobala Krishnan |

mb2u_logo_r If someone knows your Maybank account, they can get your phone number, address and other details. All they need is someone (a friend?) in Maybank that has access to the system. That’s exactly what happened to me today.

Someone called me on my personal mobile phone, and didn’t introduce himself at all. He started speaking in Tamil and I told him I could not speak in Tamil. Actually I can but I prefer not to, especially considering once you speak in Tamil, they tend to treat you less professionally. Then our conversation continued in BM.

Then as usual when someone gets hold of my personal number I always ask them how they got it. If they refused to say, conversation is over. When I asked this guy, he said:

I ask my friend in Maybank to get your phone number, from the Maybank2u account number you give on your website.

I know the fact that my name appeared in NST would draw some unexpected attention, but I didn’t expect it to come this way. The fact that someone like this can easily get access to my confidential Maybank details made me angry. Does Maybank allow anyone with access to the system to see a customer’s personal details? Should it not be available to only higher level people, with limited access?

My conversation with that guy didn’t go well after that.

Although he apologized for getting my number that way (but refused to let me know the name of the person who helped him get it or his own name for that matter) I already felt that my personal information and privacy has been compromised. I was not in the mood to talk, and I wasn’t in the mood to be nice either..

Personal data security is extremely important, but do you really think any of your information like the ones in Maybank, your credit card, your EPF data etc is really protected? I think it will never really be 100% secure, especially when other human beings are involved.

    Securing Your Online Data

There are many ways people can get your information, and the easiest way is to get hold of your login and password, which they can easily get by installing some type of keylogger software in your PC. Then, they are able to track ANY login and password you use to access your account. I strongly recommend you get RoboForm to protect all your online login data and please don’t do the same mistake I did; please do not use the same password for all your logins!

It is really dangerous nowadays,i am sure everyone has experience received call from strangers and we really don’t know how they get our number and they started to promote their products..really not safe..because at the end of the call, they will ask your credit card details, for me i will not disclose any my personal through phones unless i know the person or i am know the exist of the company.
So far there is no problem for pay pal yet,so i think is safe to upgrade your membership.

    Well my friend Gobala,

After we read your story and compared it with our fellow Malaysia friends’ similar incidents, there’s only one thing to share:-

‘There’s no professionalism’ in the system especially in the corporate world. It is true, that’s why we quit our corporate job. I think most of the people would agree to that.

    Regards,

In Malaysia, personal info are still being abused. I know because I worked in the telemarketing arena and people get these database source from the proper way and the ’suspicious’ way.

By the way your ROBOFORM link can’t seem to work.

Yeah, the link for Roboform is out. Felex, we’re sure you’ve got yourself a right choice by working on your own online, rather than suffering from a bureaucratic world.
We did the same thing, though can’t see the money yet, but we’re happy to have our own time.

I once done a market research for a well known international company for the purpose of assisting their client to enter into Malaysian market. One of the possible alternative was to tap into bank client and market their product as joint-marketing,means they have access to the bank client information. By right this is already a violation of Banking And Finance Institution Act, 1999. You therefore bro, can sue the bank for giving your information.

Another alternative was to tap into telecommunication company, which telcos sometimes rent their list to financial company. This actually happen since, one of so call vacation card company call me and try to sell me something.

I think this is the time we stood-up and use our right as stipulate in the Privacy Act.

Huh! I thought it happened to just me…

Got a phone call from a stranger asking about affiliate script and such but I know that I never dealt with this person before. Not being nice is one thing… being pushy is the other… and I never knew how he got my phone number.

BTW, I have changed my personal handphone number now!

Malaysians are not exactly good rules abiding folks, especially when it comes to things like privacy policy.

You do know that bank sells emails right?

Well, the same thing happen to me about a week ago. When I asked how he had got my mobile number, he mentioned a name of someone from Maybank who he said happened to know me. I don’t know anyone personally from Maybank.

He was trying to sell me something but I cut him off by not entertaining his monologue, asked him to call back and cut the line. What was surprising was the call was from a mobile number, usually telemarketers call from a land line.

Just a couple of days prior to the call, I had sent a TT from Maybank and I suspect that’s where they may have got my number, someone is picking it from there. I can’t imagine that they are getting from the Maybank2u database. If so that that’s scary man!!

I just sent a message under “Support” regarding your site’s latest email which included BOTH my UserID AND Password in plain text! I think that is a lapse in *your* site’s security, and it should not be happening!

Due to any of a number of possible reasons, folks might not be able to clear email promptly from wherever it is stored (server, work computer, PC, etc.), and this delay represents a window of opportunity for snoops to poke around and access information they would otherwise NOT be able to get!

Please think of a better way of interacting with members and requesting their cooperation in updating personal information, passwords, etc.

    Thanks!
